Biography/Blurb

Matthew Smith has been with HumRRO since 2001. Mr. Smith is a retired U.S. Army officer (Colonel) and veteran of the first Persian Gulf War. Mr. Smith has over 29 years of military experience, including successfully commanding at company and battalion levels and serving successfully as an operations/plans officer at every staff echelon from battalion through army headquarters. He has served as an armor battalion S3, and he twice served as a battalion executive officer; one time in combat in support of Desert Storm. Mr. Smith's other tours of duty included service with the 2nd Marine Division throughout Desert Storm, as a III Corps plan officer during the Cold War, as Chief of Plans and Current Operations for USAREUR in support of deployments and operations in the Balkans (Operation Joint Endeavor), as Director of Doctrine and Training for the USAARMC, and as Director of Battlespace for the Interim Brigade Combat Team at Fort Lewis. He is a graduate of the Israeli Commander's Course, CAS3, the US Army's Command and General Staff College, the US Army's School of Advanced Military Studies, and the US Army War College. Mr. Smith earned his BS degree from the United States Army Military Academy at West Point and has earned two MS degrees in Military Arts and Science and in Theater Operations from the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army's School of Advanced Military Studies. Mr. Smith is also a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, earning his certification from Sullivan College, Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Smith joined HumRRO in 2001 as director for a study that examined deployment training needs and opportunities for Army units participating in crisis response situations. Upon completing that project, he has and is working on the following projects and areas:

  • The development and revision of tactical field manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and mission training plans for the Armored Cavalry Regiment and Squadron, the RSTA Squadron and its subordinate units and the mission training plan for the Mounted Brigade Combat Team.
  • The research, design, development, and evaluation of collaborative networked (digital) planning and war-gaming in a distributed environment.
  • The development of a common tactical scenario to be used in research, exercises, and testing of the US Army's legacy, Interim and Future Force
  • The mission and task analysis for the Future Combat System.
